KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger could only watch in overtime as Kansas City rookie kicker Ryan Succop booted a 22-yard field goal giving the Chiefs a 27-24 stunning upset victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Roethlisberger was shaken up when he dove forward and was hit in the head by the knee of Chief's linebacker Derrick Johnson. Roethlisberger was replaced by back-up Charlie Batch for a couple plays. Before he was injured, Roethlisberger continued his aerial assault, passing for 398 yards and three touchdowns. The scoring passes went to receiver Hines Ward, tight end Heath Miller and second-year running back Rashard Mendenhall, who snagged his first receiving touchdown as a Steeler.
Mendenhall's score gave the Steelers a 24-17 lead, only to watch the Chiefs rally for the equalizer -- a Matt Cassel to Jamaal Charles hook-up late in the fourth quarter that sent the game to overtime.
The Steelers won the coin toss, but failed to score on their first possession. After a punt, Cassel led the Chiefs down the field to the eventual game-winning field goal. The big play on the drive was a Cassel to Chris Chambers 61-yard pass to the Steeler's four yard line.
Kansas City's lone bright spot in the first half came on the opening kickoff of the game when Charles returned it 97 yards for a touchdown to take a very early lead. The return is the fourth time this season that the Steelers have allowed a kick return for a touchdown.
The Steelers did not comment on the severity of Roethlisberger's injury. They were also without injured Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu and guard Chris Kemoeatu, who went out during the game with a knee injury. Polamalu may be out at least three more weeks, according to a report on ESPN.
The Steelers (6-4 ) have now dropped two straight and visit the Ravens Nov. 29.
The win snapped a Chiefs team-record 10-game home losing streak, as KC improved to 3-7 on the season.
