WHEELING -- The college basketball season is officially under way.
Wheeling Jesuit's Katie Hine is celebrating her first official win as head coach of the Lady Cards after an 80-65 victory over Lake Erie in the Tip Off Classic at Wheeling Jesuit University.
Hine replaced veteran coach Joe Key, who stepped down at the end of last season, but remains on the bench as an assistant coach.
Kourtney Booth led the Cards with 20 points and six 3-pointers. Chrissy Pavlik added 18 points on four of seven 3-pointers. The Cards made fourteen 3-pointers in the game. Freshman Kara DeSantis, a freshman from Wheeling Central, came off the bench and scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
In the other game, West Virginia Conference pre-season favorite West Liberty was beaten by Findlay 81-56.
Reigning West Virginia Conference Player of the Year Tori Hansen, who played on a sore ankle, led the Hilltoppers with 26 points. West Liberty shot 1-of-23 from the 3-point line.
Findlay was led in scoring by Audra Mihalic with 22 points. Former Wheeling Park High School All-Stater Maggie Gompers added 11 points.
Monday's schedule includes West Liberty taking on Lake Erie at 5 p.m.. Wheeling Jesuit plays Findlay at 7 p.m.
