Police say body was badly decomposed
HUNTINGTON -- The Huntington Police Department made a gruesome discovery Wednesday evening during an unrelated criminal investigation.
The officers said they were responding to a report of breaking and entering at around 7 p.m.
When they arrived at 24th Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues, they reporting finding a door forced open to an abandoned concrete building. Inside, the officers said they found a badly decomposed body. At this point, it is not clear whether the body is that of a male or female, but investigators said the clothes on the remains were consistent with male clothing. The last person who lived in the residence was Fred Hutchison, according to police. Officers are investigating further into Mr. Hutchison's whereabouts.
Police officers said they believe the body had been there for a quite some time.
The remains have been taken to the state medical examiners office, where an autopsy will be performed and a positive identification.
At this point, the investigation is in the very early stages. Investigators cannot rule out foul play, but said the home was locked from the inside, prior to the breaking and entering call.
