CHARLESTON -- Before the age of 20, more than half of all children in the United States will receive food stamps.
That is according to a study by the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
The report found that many more families are turning to food stamps for brief periods of time.
Dr. Paul Mocombe is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at West Virginia State University. He says living in poverty can have long lasting affects on young people.
"One of the issues we deal with in urban sociology is the stigma we attach to growing up in welfare homes and this is a social issue we have yet to address," Mocombe said.
According to the Food Research and Advocacy Center, 7 million more individuals needed food stamp benefits this August than in the same month a year ago.
