Hundreds of Logan County Students Absent Because of H1N1

Officials say H1N1 illness and fear are causing students to miss class.

CHAPMANVILLE  -- Officials in Logan County said there have been as many as 1,900 students out of class in one day since the start of school this year.

They said they believe that is due mostly to illnesses and concerns related to the H1N1 virus.

Parents lined up Monday at Chapmanville Regional High School to get their children vaccinated.

Lora Freshour said she will keep her kids home from school if the H1N1 virus gets too close for comfort.

"I just hope they don't send kids back to school too soon and it doesn't spread," Freshour said. "That is my biggest fear."

Logan County Schools Superintendent Wilma Zigmond said principals and teachers are using compassion and common sense when it comes to student absences. So far, they have not made any changes to their policies regarding absences.

Students are still required to provide a doctors excuse if they miss school for multiple days.
