BUCKHANNON -- The Salvation Army says bell-ringing collections were down in Upshur County last year and overall donations were down this year, due to the sluggish economy.

It normally has enough money to give food cards for $25 and up to families in need for Thanksgiving, but says it could not afford to keep the program going this year.

"It's just a hard decision that we don't have the funds for Thanksgiving, but we will be helping for Christmas - we're doing the Angel Tree," says Judy Butler, with the Buckhannon Salvation Army.

Angel Tree tags will be available at the Salvation Army, Walmart, Kroger and local banks starting November 13.

If you would like to make a donation to the Salvation Army, you can call (304) 472-6165.

Crosslines, the local emergency assistance agency, says it will still be offering Thanksgiving food packages.

For more information, you can call them at (304) 472-0743.

It's a shame that of the millionaires in this state- none can donate several thousand dollars to give out these food cards for these families that might rely on that for Thanksgiving dinner.
