MORGANTOWN -- While most universities are raising tuition to combat the recession, West Virginia University is increasing both scholarships and financial aid.
WVU will add $250,000 to the million dollars already helping students through need-based financial awards. Also, two new scholarships will provide up to $2,500 a year for incoming freshmen with high grade point averages and test scores. The students must live in West Virginia to qualify. "We recognized over the past year that it had been a very tough year for families and we wanted to make sure that the students who excelled academically had the opportunity to continue to pursue that education with some additional financial resources," said Brenda Thompson, of WVU's Enrollment office.
The school is trying to maintain its current enrollment level.
