LOGAN -- Gov. Joe Manchin said Tuesday there's no such thing as a "Fat Tax." Speaking Tuesday in Logan County, he said the term was reported erroneously and doesn't know where it came from. He added that all his administration wants to do is help people make healthy choices for a healthy lifestyles.

"I'm anxious for PEIA and I applaud them for saying let's look at everything," Manchin said. "Now, I don't think PEIA and I'm told Ted Cheatum never used the word, never used the word and I think it was wrong for someone to report and say that's what it is."

Manchin said he understands how someone would be offended by the term and he apologized for the misperception.

The state (government) has no right to come into your personal life and say, "You are fat and you have to pay an extra premium because you are a burden on everyone else(the system)."

Reasons people are overweight vary based on other health conditions; some that are beyond their control, and others that are directly related to lifestyle. I, personally know a few overweight people and skinny people for that matter that have health issues. The overweight people are healthy eaters, exercise and very active, but yet still overweight. Just because you're overweight, does not mean you are not healthy, and should therefore never be forced to pay an extra premium. This is discriminatory and is just like saying you should pay more becuase your skin color is different, OR you have no hair.

Who gives YOU the right to tell me how to live my life regardless of the choices I make, whether healthy or unhealthy. CONTROL IS NOT THE SOLUTION TO THE HUMAN CONDITION.....FREEDOM AND LIBERTY IS. Whatever happened to "Montani Semper Liberi?"

This is highly offensive. It is so expensive to eat healthy and to have a trainer or gym membership. State workers in some offices do the work of 10 offices and no real pay for the work. I agree that being overweight does not automatically make you unhealthy any more than being thin makes you healthy.

Some medications are also to blame for weight gain as well as preexisting conditions that prevent certain or all excercise.

If the fat tax "does not exist", then how can it be coming up for discussion in Charleston on Nov. 9? PEIA would do more for state worker's weight if they would pay membership fees for fitness programs without all of the red tape that is currently in place. There are skinny people with a lot of health problems also, so this extra tax would be very discriminatory.
