CLARKSBURG -- In 1984, Bob Holmes decided he wanted to stop help suicide among kids, so he picked up a volleyball and took his one-man show on the road. He wants to teach kids it is not always cool to follow the leader.
"I stand alone on the court and I go against the whole team as a fun way of saying you don't have to do what everybody else is doing and follow the crowd, but stand alone," says Holmes.
Twenty-four years and 5, 500 assemblies later Holmes is still going strong. Throughout this week he has visited several area schools and in a tough competition, Wednesday, he took on students at Robert C. Byrd High School, including the varsity girl's volleyball team.
"We thought we were going to win, but he put up a good fight," says Junior Hitter Emily Wimer.
Holmes uses his volleyball games to get the students attention and says the schools he has visited in the area are special.
"Every single school I've been in, they've been extremely attentive to the message and having fun with me and I've been able to have a nice rapport with the crowd and especially the end, when they listen they really listen good," says Holmes.
Holmes favorite part of the one-man volleyball team is hearing from kids whose lives he has touched.
