The nationally recognized day began in 1992 by the International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR), the annual event aims to bring more attention to the homeless cats and dogs dilemma and encourage pet owners to have their animals spayed and neutered.
The Kanawha/Charleston Humane Association will hold a cermony and candlelight vigil to honor homeless animals at 6 p.m.
