HUNTINGTON -- The Huntington Police Department is one 1,046 law enforcement agencies across the nation to receive money from the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program created by the stimulus bill
Hank Dyles with the department says HPD will receive enough money to pay for four new officers, which is $698,860.
Kenova Department of Public Safety in Wayne County was also awarded $162,331 to hire one new officer. Ceredo Police Department will get $126,861.
More than 7,200 applications were submitted to the Department of Justice for more than 39,000 officer positions.
A total of $1 billion in grants were awarded to hire and rehire law enforcement officers accross the country.
26 agencies in the state received a combined total of $5,081,802.
