Teays Valley -- Most of Route 35 is 4 lanes. However, a 13 mile stretch from the Buffalo Bridge to Mason County still remains 2 lanes. Now the state is seriously considering making that section a toll road to finish the 4-lane upgrades.
"The road is going to provide a lot of extra business, extras commerce our state really needs, and if paying a little bit as a resident is what it needs, then it should be finished," says Todd Griffith of Putnam County.
Others are against the tolls. For starters they fear increased traffic on roadways like Old Route 35 by motorists trying to avoid paying the tolls.
"They'll come right up through the town of Winfield and it will increase more traffic for us trying to get out in the mornings," says Richard Stone of Winfield. "I believe it's a bad idea. I think it will back up traffic and make congestion a lot worse than it already is," says Tim Hill of Putnam County.
As the debate heats up, battle lines will soon be drawn. "We'll turn a petition into the town of Winfield and county commissioners, signatures of people who are against this," says Stone.
"It's like the turnpike. The turnpike beats the other way what I always tell people who complain about the turnpike," says Tom Racer of Lincoln County.
A D-O-H spokesperson says the public will have input on the final decision regarding the toll option, adding no timetable for a decision has been set.
If no other funding sources can be found, Putnam County Commissioners publicly support the toll road option to finish the four-lane portion of Route 35.
