Martins Ferry -- MORE LATE BREAKING DEVELOPMENTS: There is late word that pictures were taken of a plaster paris molding of the surrogate mother's stomach. Those pictures are in the hands of investigators. As Martins Ferry Ohio is thrust into the national spotlight over the Sarah Jessica Parker controversy, 7 News is now learning that the city's top cop is saying that the plot to allegedly break into the home of Parker's surrogate mother was apparently a joke.
That word comes from Mayor Phil Wallace who told 7 News Reporter Dave Elias that "the only thing he did tell me is that it was a joke. It started out as a joke. That's as far as he went with it."
Wallace says when he found out that the Bureau of Criminal Investigation was looking into the matter he questioned Chief Barry Carpenter about the plot.
Sources close to the investigation reveal that Carpenter and Bridgeport Chief Chad Dojack were allegedly involved in a plot to burglarize the home belonging to Parker's surrogate mother who is carrying twins for the Sex In The City star. Sources further say the two may have been working with a tabloid reporter who was looking for a story.
Sources working on the investigation also tell 7 News that a plaster of paris cast of the surrogates stomach was inside the home, but it's unclear if it was removed.
7 News cameras went to Chief Carpenter's office, but we were told he was not in and gone for the rest of the day.
Mayor Wallace says despite all of the controversy Carpenter remains on the job.
BREAKING NEWS: There is late word that Special Prosecutor Shawn Hervey who is reviewing the case is preparing to hold a news conference on the matter the first week in July.
7 News is the station trust as sources close to the investigation have confirmed everything we have reported so far.
