CHARLESTON -- Some West Virginia Chrysler dealership owners were in D.C. Tuesday preparing to testify in a Senate committee hearing tomorrow on Capitol Hill.

At issue is the impact of the Chrysler and GM dealership closings in West Virginia.

As they were preparing to fly out of Yeager Airport, Spencer Auto Group President Pete Lopez said he wants to know why his Chrysler and GM dealership, which recently won an award from Chrysler for outstanding sales, got a pink slip.

"He's thanking us for what a job we did in a flat economy and how much they appreciate us and we're part of the Chrysler family. And now he wants to divorce me," said Pete Lopez, President of the Spencer Auto Group in Roane County.

Lopez will be testifying along with the heads of Chrysler and GM before the Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee chaired by Senator Jay Rockefeller.

The committee will be looking into problems those closures will cause for small businesses and their customers.

"Geographically, West Virginia is not like any other state. We still have two-lane roads. Our people are going to have to drive two-and-a-half hours for service," said Lopez.

Also joining him: Charles Rashid of Logan Chrysler Dodge & Jeep and Ruth Lemmon, President of the West Virginia Auto and Truck Dealers Association.

"That store's been there since 1961 and I have to service them and not able to do that anymore. Frankly, It's un-American. My business has been taken away from me," said Charles Rashid of Logan Chrysler Dodge & Jeep in Logan County.

They're hoping their concerns translates into results.

"Particularly as it relates to a soft landing for these dealers - giving them the opportunity to get rid of this inventory, or not totally go bankrupt," said Ruth Lemmon, President of the West Virginia Auto & Truck Dealers Association.

These dealers say it's not just about their business. It's about their community.

The hearing begins at 2:30 Wednesday and will be webcast live and archived for viewing later on the Commerce Committee website at: http://commerce.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Home.Home>.
