HUNTINGTON -- The federal tax on tobacco will increase from 39-cents to $1.01 in April. That increase has some smokers angry while others say it may be a reason to cut back or quit for good.
Smokers in West Virginia are bracing for a huge increase in price next month.
According to national report, New Yorkers pay the highest state tax at $2.75 per pack. South Carolina residents pay only 7-cents. State taxes on cigarettes in West Virginia are 25-cents per pack. Some smokers say the increase in taxes, whether state or federal will create a hardship on people who can least afford it.
Rob Hickman is a smoker. He says the increase may force some people to choose between bying cigarettes or food.
Kristin Wheatley is a non-smoker. She says some people may quit because they can't afford the higher prices.
