WEB EXTRA: Full Del. Eldridge Interview
Lincoln County delegate wants certain dolls out of WV stores. WEB EXTRA: Watch Complete Interview with Bill Sponsor.

Story by Sara Gavin

CHARLESTON -- Barbie has been around for decades, but is it time for the blond to be banned?

It may sound silly, but it's a serious issue for one West Virginia delegate.

"I just hate the image that we give to our kids that if you're beautiful, you're beautiful and you don't have to be smart," said Del. Jeff Eldridge, (D) Lincoln County.

Delegate Jeff Eldridge introduced a bill to the house on Tuesday asking lawmakers to stop the sales of Barbie in the mountain state.

Delegate Eldridge isn't trying to target just Barbie but any doll that puts too much importance on physical beauty.

"I knew a lot of people were going to joke about it and poke fun at me. I couldn't get anybody to sign on the bill with me but I said I'm still going to introduce it," said Eldridge.

"I think that it's nice to have a male member of the House of Delegates worried about women's images and what they're supposed to do or they think they're supposed to do to succeed. My sense is that this is probably not a bill that's going to pass," said Del. Nancy Peoples Guthrie, (D) Kanawha County.

Amy Smith of Charleston says her three daughters haven't shown a lot of interest in Barbie yet but should that day come, she's not counting on the legislature to help her send the right message.

"I think that there are other ways to promote confidence and instill values in your daughters other than the toys that they play with," said Smith. "I don't have a problem with Barbie."

The Barbie Ban Bill has been sent to the House Judiciary Committee. Delegate Eldridge admits getting it passed may be a long-shot, but says he's prepared to stand behind his legislation.

Yeah, because outlawing Barbie dolls is really going to fix anything. Girls are always going to have images of thin, pretty women flying at them. Television, magazines, movies, billboards, and more; it all promotes a certain standard of beauty that most americans will never meet.

Oh, and hasn't Barbie had certain personalities like DOCTORS and nurses and vets? Don't all of these require a good education?

The only people who want Barbie outlawed are ugly people who feel sorry for themselves. If you really hate yourself that much because Barbie has a tiny waste, maybe you should stop eating fast food and get off your ass once in a while.

Is there a way to impeach this idiot? West Virginians are out of work and struggling, and this idiot wants the legislature to ban Barbie dolls????? What an idiot!!! Barbie dolls have been around for years. Leave the little girls alone and let them play with their toys. Besides, what are the little boys going to do to irritate their sisters by taking the legs and heads off of the dolls if they're banned? It's a rite of passage :) Leave the kids alone and worry about getting West Virginians back to work you IDIOT!

What happened to parents? I know that I haven't taught my children that Barbie is the basis for all things feminine. When are parents going to supply confidence to their own children? We give too much power to those few that run this nation to teach our children what "they" think my children need to know. What happened to individual parenting and moral responsibility?

I love Barbie, I grow up with her and even now at 18 I still have my collector Barbies. Some day if I have a little girl, I will give them to her. When I was little I never compared my self to Barbie, I never compared my self to her because I new that Barbie was not a real person and my mom made sure I new that. It was not in tell I was older that I would compare my self to other women and it was with magazine and the TV. Barbie has given me so many happy years of playing with her and it would be a sad world without her to brighten the eyes of little girls.

Are you really serious. Barbie? Don't we have more important issues to deal with than whether or not ugly people feel bad.

"Barbie" The next president of the United States. Get real. Find something else to do. There are a lot worse things going on. But if that's all we have to worry about, then we're in good shape. What about tackling the real problems such as child abuse and hungry children for starters.

Melinda A, ordinarily I'd agree with your sentiments, but the Barbi dolls are made in China (as is most everything we buy). So no US workers will be losing their jobs.

Yeeeah it's really smart to put out factory workers who assemble Barbie in a recession. Those people have families. And just for a political message too that can be taught by talking to people instead of dictating your opinion??? ... but then again, who wants to talk to a wackjob like that? Not really selling her idea wisely no matter how true some of the points are! It just puts more burden on young girls to choose this cute plastic image, or some wicked witch! Well what about a mature image? We're doomed. DOOMED!!

All of the ugly Leftist chicks want barbie banned. I could see the reason for their angst.

Then again, Leftist chiks give it up easy. Ask Bill Clinton. He did it for the nookie.

Hey, If they ban Barbie, maybe that would free some time up for Geitner and the boys to pay their taxes, after they put the barbies down of course.

Obviously this guy needs to get a real job. He does not have enough to do to keep himself out of trouble. Seems WVa could use someone who is half smart in that seat. I am sure there are real problems WVa needs dealt with. Did the bimbo run an anti-barbie campaign or is this just his idea of a hidden agenda?

I have worked in State Government and there are a lot more stupid bills than this one. Believe me...way more stupid.

Although nothing will come of it, he has sure raised awareness. I applaud him as a mother of little girls who blogs about these image issues for young girls. www.beyondpinkblog.com

I do agree that in 20 years barbie has changed. Her breasts have gotten smaller and her hips bigger and in some cases she even has tattoos. I do not thank that in a "free" country that a government should regulate what safe toys our children play with. My six year old daughter has played with barbies for many years and never once has she said "i want to be like her." I think that people trying to ban barbie for her looks are the ones who make our children think that they should have something to be self conscious about. Kids have enough to worry about these days and now some fool wants to take away their fun, maybe he just wishes he had a barbie to play with.

A Barbie doll is not the only reason Americans are 'beauty conscious' of course, but thank goodness for other dolls out there like Dora the Explorer who isn't a beauty.I would say we are definitely influenced by physical appearance whether we want to admit it or not. If not, then why are 'designer babies' in the news today? NBCLosAngeles.com updated 4:45 a.m. CT, Tues., March. 3, 2009 Want a baby with blonde hair and green eyes? Get your wallet out. A Los Angeles fertility clinic is offering a new service that would allow couples to choose their baby's physical traits, including eye and hair color. The LA Fertility Institutes said it has already received half a dozen requests for the service and expects the first designer baby to be born next year.

My concern over images such as Barbie and Bratz dolls were my motivation in creating the Happy Heart Princess. I feel that these unrealistic Hollywood images are robbing our little girls of their self esteem and their childhood. Some of the problems we are currently facing stem from childhood issues so this carefully about your accusations. www.happyheartprincess.com

So we can join the ranks of other places that ban Barbie...

...The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (home of 15 of the Sept. 11 hijackers and birthplace of Osama bin Laden)

...The Islamic Republic of Iran

So Delegate Eldridge, what other political views do you share with the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Osama bin Laden?

Are they serious?! I played with Barbies when I was a little girl, I played with all my friends, I even played with my mom & sister. So what if shes blonde and beautiful, Barbie is a great outlet for the imagination. She comes with all the cool accessories and different clothes, little girls everywhere get to express themselves through that. Further more, shouldnt the government be more focused on the poor economy and coming up with ways to bring new life to the state rather than banning a doll?

I think this is absolutely absurd, shouldn't they have more important things to deal with than banning something that brings a lot of little girls a lot of happiness, fun times, and good memories. Completely ridiculous.

Wait till the Barbie Ban makes the AP wire. We will look even more pathetic. The rest of the world is focused on the economic crisis and we are worried about a doll making our children feel bad about themselves? Wonder if Manchin is hoping that the Barbie Ban will get the Road Kill story out of the news?

You have to be kidding me! Banning Barbie?? You might as well ban TV and the internet! If this is the junk that the legislators are spending their time on, when the next elections come around get rid of them and put someone in that will actually do their jobs! All anyone would have to do is go over to either OH or KY and get the dolls. This guy would be driving hard earned WV dollars to other states! Eldridge, wake up!

Are you serious? What a waste of air time. Rather than feeling "threatened" over a harmless doll, how about focusing on the obesity problem in West Virginia's schools which causes even bigger self esteem problems for young girls?

And to think our taxpayers money is going into providing a paycheck for Delegate Eldridge. Who's next on the chopping block G.I. Joe?
