PRENTER, West Virginia -- Water woes consuming a small community in Boone County has residents springing into action.

Those living along the ten mile stretch of Prenter Road in Boone County say for the last few years, their water has become undrinkable.

A waterline project is underway, but they say it could take a year or more.

So they've started a water project...barrels sit on porches of participating residents and a tank was purchased to haul in clean water.

But the barrels remain empty.

"Really the only thing that we're waiting for is more funding to be able to pay our delivery driver and the ongoing costs of the project. If somebody walked up to me today and handed me $2,000 there'd be water being delivered in two days," said Mathew Louis-Rosenberg with the Prenter Water Fund.

To make a tax-deductible donation to the Prenter Water Fund, visit www.prenterwaterfund.org, send to Prenter Water Fund c/o Coal River Mountain Watch, P.O. Box 651, Whitesville, WV 25209 or call (304) 854-1937.

People aren't dying because of the water, they are dying for other reasons like old age and other illness. NOT WATER. There is nothing wrong with this water. Not everyone in Prenter are sick expecially not no 98% of the folks in Prenter. Prenter is just a small community at the head of the holler not the complete holler. Y'all are just making a big deal out of NOTHING.

In answer to all your questions posted.

It takes time to force (yes we must force) our government to do the right thing. IN the meantime we have people 53 yrs old dying. That's my age and I used to think that was ancient but now that I'm 53 it doesn't seem that old. But I'm not going to sit down and do nothing while waiting on government to get their thumbs out of their butts and do the right thing. That is why we are asking for money for clean water delivery.

I care what caused the water problems but I'm not at liberty to say. But very, very soon everyone will know what caused it but we must have proof first! Stay tuned for proof! Merry Christmas!

This article fails to mention that 98% of people in this hollow have gallbladder disease or that a 5 year old has a full set of dentures, and that practically everyone in Prenter is sick. Why not show an image of the black water these people have to drink, cook, and bathe in rather than this clear running pipe?

The big question in my mind is, why are the ones responsible for the water contamination not made to pay for the health problems? This is criminal! Why are donations needed when the coal companies are raking in millions? A few thousand dollars is nothing to companies like Massey. What about the DEP? If they allowed this to happen, shouldn't they also be made to pay? I know it's naive of me to think either the coal companies or the dep will willingly cough up the money or even admit wrongdoing. Is there a lawsuit being brough against anyone?

anyone care to guess what caused their water problems? apparently the news article neglects to mention that the cause is slurry injection from the neighboring mines. this article also neglects to mention the illnesses that this community has because of what our DEP allows these mines to do in our communities.
