ROANOKE, Va -- 13News has learned that a former local physician has been killed in a Roanoke, Va crash.
We are learning from sources close to the family that the victims were Dr. Jeffrey E. George and his 13 year-old daughter Hannah.
It happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 81 near the Rockbridge County line. Roanoke CBS Affiliate WDBJ-TV reports witnesses seeing George's Chevy Suburban hit a guard rail, flip over several times, hit an embankment and catch fire.
Virginia State Police believe the victims survived the crash but died in the fire.
Again, sources have told 13News the bodies are that of George and his daughter, although the bodies have been taken to the Virginia State Medical Examiners office and because of the severity of the fire, it could be days before an official identification.
WDBJ-TV reports several drivers stopped and tried to help. The story adds that investigators are trying to figure out what caused the Suburban to initially hit the guardrail.
They're hoping a data recorder inside the vehicle will provide some answers, but investigators fear it may have been destroyed in the fire.
Dr, George was a well-known Cardiovascular surgeon in the Huntington area and worked at St. Mary's Medical Center. He as also a well-known philanthropist. Because of his donations, the Hospitality House renamed it after him. George moved his family to Roanoke last year when he took a position at Carilion Clinic.
