SOUTH CHARLESTON -- A 5th grade teacher at a South Charleston elementary school got a big surprise Thursday morning.
Roger Samples, who teaches at Richmond Elementary, received the 2008 West Virginia Teacher Achievement Award.
The award is given in memory of Frieda Riley who taught the boys profiled in the movie "The Rocket Boys."
Samples is the youngest in a family of ten.
He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis about twelve years ago.
When doctors told him he had to stop teaching, he wouldn't.
"I'm fortunate enough that I get to teach. It is a privilege. It is an honor and this is my 26th year. I love it as much today as when I started 26 years ago," said Roger Samples, Richmond Elementary teacher.
Samples also received $5,000 as part of the award.
