Eleanor -- Deke Smith of Eleanor has helped clear several hiking and biking trails in Putnam County. He says a lot of volunteer time and money has gone for those efforts, but unfortunately, he's also seen the damage an ATV can do to a trail.
"Makes me mad. I go down through there and it's a hazard. All of a sudden you got a rut in the road where it shouldn't be," says Smith.
Now county leaders are considering an ordinance that would ban ATV's from county park property, focusing on keeping them off hiking and biking trails, but the law does much more.
"Into the fields after a big rain and doing doughnuts in the field, things of that nature that physically destroy the park property or the trails," says Scott Williamson, Director of the Putnam County Parks and Recreation Commission.
Despite the fact that there are signs in the park prohibiting ATV's, violators can only receive a trespassing warning. This new ordinance would strengthen enforcement.
"We want to be able to give police the opportunity to enforce it if they catch them physically damaging the park," says Williamson.
County commission is expected to eventually pass the ordinance. If that happens, violators could face fines of up to one hundred dollars.
The proposal has been sent back to the Parks and Recreation Commission to change some of the wording.
