A Charleston man fights for his life while his loved ones fight for answers

CHARLESTON -- B.J. Berkhouse, 30, remains in a coma suffering from extensive and life-threatening injuries.

"He's had his cheek reconstructed, his jaw was broken in four places. He has 20 plates and screws around his eye," said Berkhouse's girlfriend Lindsay Bolar.

Just after 1 a.m. on June 7, Berkhouse was struck by a car while walking along Capitol Street.

Although the woman driving the vehicle has yet to be charged, police say she was under the influence of alcohol.

"We want everyone to know that what happened is not okay - I mean he was an innocent pedestrian walking down the sidewalk," said Bolar.

Warner Law offices in Charleston is now representing Berkhouse and helping his family piece together the details of what happened.

The law office placed an ad in a Charleston newspaper asking people to contact them who may have witnessed the accident or seen the driver in the hours leading up to it.

"It appears she was in one particular bar for an extended time period and perhaps should not have been served alcohol - certainly not at the level she was that evening," said attorney Bobby Warner.

Attorneys are considering legal action against that Charleston establishment.

In the meantime, B.J.'s loved ones are focused on his recovery but hope his story will serve as a wake-up call for others.

"I think everything's for a purpose and I'm just praying this will open other people's eyes," said B.J.'s mother, Geneal Berkhouse.

The family has set up a foundation in B.J.'s name through BB&T Bank to help cover current and future medical expenses.

Contact the BB&T branch inside Riverwalk Plaza in South Charleston to contribute.

A fund raiser featuring horseshoes and corn hole is also planned for July 12 at Coonskin Park in Charleston at noon.
