CHARLESTON -- Same-sex couples can now unite in marriage in the state of California.
That after the Supreme Court rules to overturn a ban on gay and lesbian couples to exchange vows.
On the other side of the nation...in Charleston...different groups have varying reactions.
Pastors with the Unitarian Universalist Congregation say it's another step toward equality and hope soon, same-sex marriage will be recognized here.
But folks with The Family Policy Council of West Virginia say same-sex marriage will have a negative effect on children.
"They're more likely to do drugs; they're more likely to engage in premature sexual activity. More likely to abuse alcohol, they're more likely to drop out of high school," said Jeremy Dys of The Family Policy Council of West Virginia.
Rev. Mel Hoover of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation disagrees. "We can't categorically say because someone has same-sex parenting that that somehow is going to make them worse. I just don't think that's honest. I don't think that's realistic."
In a few months, Californians will vote on an initiative that would overturn the Supreme Court ruling and again ban gay marriage.
