HUNTINGTON -- A group of middle school students in Huntington knows what it's like to have a job. That's because these students recently started their own business, Beads For Hope.
Allyson Schoenlein with Cabell County Schools said she started the project with a student she mentors.
"We brought a friend in who would help us make some really nice ones [bracelets] before Christmas as presents and they got so good so fast, we started thinking, well, this could be a business," Schoenlein said.
The group meets for one hour after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays to make their products. They design everything from bracelets and necklaces to keychains and bookmarks. They even designed a business plan.
"We'll just imagine in our heads what we think is going to look best to sell," said 7th grade student Andrea Kirk.
"You can just take your imagination and put it out in real life," added Richard Tyler.
"I did not understand the kinds of things that they're understanding now when I was their age," said Schoenlein. "How important it is when you have a business, what you have to think about, like advertising or one of the things we talked about the other day, attendance."
And they're also learning about giving. These students say the money they earn will either go back into the business or to a local children's charity.
