Documents show Christi Layne was trying to protect herself against her husband

Story by Sara Gavin

PORTSMITH, Ohio --  Former students of Notre Dame Elementary School teacher Christi Layne describe her as dedicated and compassionate.

"She was one of my favorite teachers. She was just really nice, just really nice to everybody," said Jen Arnzen, Layne's former student and next-door neighbor.

"Great teacher, really good, just like I mean anytime you think about something bad happening to the wrong people, this is it," said Case Kegley, another of Layne's former students.

Many in the close-knit community of Portsmouth are still shocked about what happened inside Layne's fifth grade classroom Thursday morning.

However, several sources suggest Christi knew her husband Mike might turn to violence. Court records show Christi Layne received a protective order against her husband on Jan. 15

Just two weeks ago, she filed for divorce after 34 years of marriage.

"She was extremely frightened," said Attorney Rebecca Bennett who helped Layne file for the protective order.

In the document, Christy describes a December phone call her husband made in which he says to tell her son Eric he'll see him in hell and it will be sooner than he thinks.

Christy also said she feared Mike Layne might hurt her and her son when he got mad.

"She set up security at her home and just did everything she could do, she understood though that it's just an order, it's just a court order," said Bennett. "It's not a shield, it's just a piece of paper and it's not obviously going to stop a knife or a bullet."
