James Beatty was indicted by the Pocahontas County Grand Jury
MARLINTON -- James Beatty faces charges of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, custodian or other person of trust.
Prosecutors say Beatty sexually assaulted a female student during a school-sponsored Future Farmers of America retreat at the Cass Scenic Railroad.
Beatty allegedly tried to kiss the girl several times after the incident as well.
Beatty teaches animal sciences at Elkins High School.
Randolph County School Superintendent Sue Hinzman says the school board has suspended Beatty without pay pending the outcome of his trial.
Hinzman says if he is found innocent he will be reinstated with back pay, if found guilty, Beatty will be fired.
Beatty was the West Virginia Association of Agricultural Educators' Outstanding Young Teacher in 2005 and 2006 and a 2006 recipient of the Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award.
