New Schools Mean New Jobs are up for Grabs

Skyview and Mylan Park will be the newest additions to the Monongalia County School system. Westover, Arnettsville, Cassville, Riverside and Waitman-Barbe will close as a result. That means teachers and students at those schools will be relocated.

Story by Lauren Hills

It's Anne Lupo's first year in the Monongalia County School district. And right now, it's shaping up to be her last.

"It's all up in the air," Lupo says.

She teaches at Cassville Elementary. It's one of the five schools that'll be closed once Skyview and Mylan Park are ready. Employees of the closing schools began bidding on the positions at the new ones a few months ago. And Superintendent Frank Devono says it comes down to one thing.

"Senority is the law of the land we basically follow here in West Virginia," says Devono.

Lupo says she's okay with senority but she also taught out of state for seven years.

"I think my years in Illinois should count for something," she says.

In this case, they don't. Devono says with five schools combining to two, they just don't need as many positions.

"We're trying to see what other positions are available to afford everyone an opportunity for employment when we start school in August and September," says Devono.

So until she gets the official word on her job, Lupo's trying to keep her options open.

"I'll have to look for something else if nothing comes up."

Mylan Park and Skyview should be completed by the end of this summer.
