Counselors at four Jackson County Schools to help students cope with the loss.
Story by Kimberly Beary
and The Associated Press
A Jackson County teacher and well known state artist is the first person in 15 years to die on the Cranberry River.
Today, students at four elementary schools made cards for Sarah Sally Naas' family. The 62 year old experienced kayaker died Sunday when she hit an undercurrent on the Nicholas county river. Counselors are helping staff and students cope with the loss.
"It was a shock for them," said Cottageville Elementary School Teacher Jennifer Turner of the children, "I think it will get worse when they go into her room tomorrow for art and she's not there."
Naas' contributions to the state include more than educating tomorrow's leaders. A quilt made by the award winning artist is a part of the Cultural center's permanent collection.
Jackson County schools plans to dedicate this year's annual art show in her memory.
