It’s fall, and if you’re like me you’ve probably seen a few woolly bear caterpillars on the roads or walkways at parks. I’ve heard rumblings that these critters can predict what the upcoming winter will be like based on the size of the brown band in its middle. So when I received a newsletter from the National Wildlife Federation on these creatures, I figured it might be a fun Friday activity to learn a little bit more about the Woolly Bear.According to David Mizejewski of the NWF, the woolly bear caterpillars are traveling about in autumn because they’re looking for safe places to stay in during winter. Then in spring, they “create cocoons and pupate, eventually emerging as Isabella tiger moths.” As I mentioned above, to many these creatures are most-known for their perceived ability to predict how harsh or mild the upcoming winter will be. It’s supposedly based on the brown band on the Woolly Bear – the wider the band, the milder the winter. The NWF newsletter provides a link to the Farmer’s Almanac, where you can learn more about the Woolly Bear and its tie to weather prediction. Definitely check it out – you’ll see that there may actually be a weather connection to the critter! -Alexandra Wilson
